Manchester United will be looking to make a winning start to the Erik ten Hag era when they welcome Brighton to Old Trafford for their Premier League opener this afternoon, kick-off 2pm.
United, who were beaten 4-0 by the Seagulls in their most recent meeting back in May, will be hopeful of building on a relatively strong pre-season campaign and getting three points on the board. United won three of their six friendlies, producing several encouraging performances.
But even though their pre-season performances were encouraging, United are still determined to add to their squad ahead of the transfer window closing at the start of next month. The Reds have made three new signings so far this summer, landing Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen, all of whom could make their competitive debuts for the club this afternoon.
United remain hopeful of signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, although the deal has hit a major snag because of the €17million worth of deferred wages that he is owed. He is the club's top target and Ten Hag sees him as the ideal option to bolster his midfield options.
Meanwhile, speculation continues to surround Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Old Trafford. It remains to be seen if he will start in place of the injured Anthony Martial this afternoon.

Tuchel gives United hope in De Jong pursuit
Thomas Tuchel has given Manchester United hope in their ongoing pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.
The midfielder has been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent days, which would come as a bitter blow to United given how long they've been after the Barcelona star.
Tuchel though has admitted a midfielder is not his priority, suggesting the Blues may not be as interested as first thought.
If we can add, we add. Maybe not necessarily a midfielder as a first option but we’re open for everything.

United eye up Fabian Ruiz as 'ideal alternative' to De Jong
Reports suggest Manchester United are eyeing up Fabian Ruiz as an alternative to Frenkie de Jong.
The Napoli midfielder has been linked to the club previously, and with United continuing to be left frustrated in their pursuit of De Jong, his name has been touted once again.
According to Goal, United see Ruiz as an "ideal alternative" to De Jong. They also suggest Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves are two of the other names on the club's shortlist.

Ten Hag's message to the fans
Erik ten Hag has sent a message to Manchester United fans ahead of his first game in charge today.
The former Ajax boss of course leads United in his first competitive game today against Brighton, and he's determined to reconnect the fans to the club following a disastrous campaign last year.
The stadium I think is meant to bring fight and cooperation. But we have to give the example out on the pitch, we must have the right attitude and that attitude means hard work but also especially, it means being brave. If we bring that commitment then I think they [the fans] will like it and they will bring the fight back.

OPINION: United have two players who could be like new signings vs Brighton
United get their season underway later today as they host Brighton, when they'll look to make the perfect start to proceedings in the Premier League.
The Reds head into the new season off the back of an encouraging pre-season, in which they showed an identity that has been lacking in recent years.
While United's collective performances on the pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia were encouraging enough, there were also several individual showings that caught the eye of those watching closely. Among those to impress most were Diogo Dalot and Jadon Sancho.

Ronaldo shares Instagram message ahead of Brighton tussle
After months of speculation surrounding the future of Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United, the season is finally about to get underway with the forward potentially set to start against Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.
Ronaldo has requested to leave the club and has been criticised after leaving the club's final pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano at half-time. United boss Erik ten Hag has had to field questions on the topic of his talisman's future but has insisted he remains a part of his plans.
Following an injury to Anthony Martial, Ronaldo could be set to start his side's match vs Brighton on Sunday, even though he's only played 45 minutes of pre-season football. Despite his lack of game time, the star has sent a message to fans and manager Ten Hag, insisting that he is ready for the new campaign.

How United should line up vs Brighton in Premier League opener
Manchester United will be looking to make a winning start to the 2022/23 Premier League campaign when they host Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.
The visit of the Seagulls will mark the beginning of a new dawn at Old Trafford and Erik ten Hag's first competitive game in charge. The Dutchman experienced life in the Old Trafford home dugout for the first time last weekend, watching his side conclude their pre-season preparations with a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano.
The stalemate with the Spanish outfit meant that United ended their pre-season schedule with a return of three wins, two draws and one defeat from their six friendlies.
