We're Revving Up a First Look at DreamWorks Animation's ‘Mighty Monsterwheelies’ on Netflix (EXCLUSIVE) (2024)

Get ready to see monsters in a whole new heroic way! Mighty Monsterwheelies, the new preschool television series from DreamWorks Animation is on track to premiere October 14 on Netflix. And from this exclusive first look at the trailer, the message is clear: Everyone can be a hero in their own unique way.

Executive-produced by Stephanie Simpson (Hilda, Octonauts, Barney, and Shimmer & Shine) and curated by head writer and editor Kyel White (Fast & Furious Spy Racers, Abominable and the Invisible City) Mighty Monsterwheelies is on a mission to help kids understand the importance of problem-solving, working as a team, and overcoming obstacles.

About 'Mighty Monsterwheelies'

In the town of MotorVania, half-monster, half-rescue vehicles known as Monsterwheelies are on a mission to protect their community. No matter the challenge, the Monsterwheelies supercharge their way to accomplishing the task while blocking the plans of troublemakers like Phantom Freeze and Invisible Van.

The series features a creative spin on iconic Universal monster characters voiced by: Tru Valentino as “Bolts Frankenstein,” Grace Lu as “Axyl Bride,” Cal Brady as “Sonnie Dracula.” Matt Lowe as “Sweeps Wolfman,” Sandra Saad as “Gill E. Creature,” Chester Rushing as “Wraps Stretcher,” Weird Al Yankovich as “Mayor Van Helsing, "Sean Astin as “Invisible Van,” and Ashley Park as “Phantom Freeze”.

Constructing the Show's Concept

Parents spoke with Simpson and White about the inspiration behind the show’s concept, the key messaging, and what they hope kids gain from the themes in each episode.

“The initial concept came from wanting to introduce the classic Universal monsters to a preschool audience in a way that was both accessible and not too scary," explains White.

He says a fun way to do that was to flip the characters from being seen as the “monsters” of the story to being seen as the “heroes,” by combining them with real-life heroes that kids are familiar with: firefighters, paramedics, mechanics, etc.

White's hope for the series? To let kids know at an early age that “You don't have to look a certain way or behave a certain way to be seen as a hero. Being a hero is all-inclusive. If a monster can be a hero, then so can you.”

Each episode deliberately centers on teaching young viewers better social and emotional skills. Simpson adds that the team worked with educational consultants and The Center for Scholars and Storytellers to ensure the concept would benefit preschoolers.

“We wanted to answer the questions: Where did this problem come from? What were [the characters'] motivations? And, we learn to solve the problem together. I would say that was kind of our overarching philosophy,” says Simpson.

Characters Kids Can Root For

Both White and Simpson agree that what setsMighty Monsterwheeliesapart from the rest is the series’ emotional reality, which is a result of clever writing that mixes the tones of the characters really well.

Speaking of the characters, Simpson candidly shares what she loves about each:

  • About "Bolts" the Frankenstein fire truck: "He's the leader. I love his strength and his absolute commitment to getting the job done, no matter what it takes. I also love his laugh."
  • About "Sweeps" the Wolfman trash truck and street sweeper: "He has a dog-like and playful enthusiasm for life. I love that he is all heart, all the time."
  • About "Gill E." the Creature lifeguard ATV: "She is a bubbly, effervescent eternal optimist. I love that her spirits are unsinkable, no matter how big the challenge."
  • About "Wraps" the Mummy ambulance: "He is both brave and gentle. I love that he is courageous and caring.
  • About "Axyl" the Bride tow truck: "I love her warmth and her grit. She never gives up, and she sticks with a problem until she solves it."
  • About "Sonnie" the Dracula motorcycle/helicopter combo: "I love that Sonnie can make a funny joke while also performing a deadly serious rescue. Sonnie proves that a light touch can do some heavy lifting in a dangerous situation.”

When young viewers tune in to Mighty Monsterwheelies they will go on a fun ride from the very beginning. But, what White and Simpson hope kids gain most from the series is the importance of individuality.

"Every character's point of view is important," observes White. "And, I think that is very important in a [binary] world, where you're either good or you're bad.”

Simpson adds, “And there's space for everyone to be whoever they are–[highlighting the idea] that we really need each other, not in spite of our differences, but because of our differences.”

We'll be keeping an eye out for the debut of Mighty Monsterwheelies on Netflix October 14.
